Located on coastal reclaimed land in the Hidd industrial area of Muharraq Island, the 950 MW Al Ezzel combined cycle power plant was the first Independent Power Project undertaken by the Government of Bahrain. GPZ was appointed as the main contractor, under the EPC contractor, for the civil and building works of the project.
Initial works involved the demolition of existing buildings, dismantling of electrical sub-stations and removal of all existing roads together with surface and sub-surface service installations. Subsequent works included the construction of a Steam and Gas Turbine Building, an Administration and Control Room Building, a Workshop and Store Building, a Demineralisation Plant and a Gate House, as well as concrete troughs for HV cables consisting of an intricate system of reinforced concrete ducting with heavy duty precast covers to take heavy vehicle loads.
Structures and foundations were provided for the Emergency Power Generators, transformers, Power Control Centre, storage tanks, loading areas and other facilities. The external works included all access roads, parking areas, hard standings and pavements, in addition to the drainage systems for storm water, sewage, oily surface and process water.
The project involved close coordination with several specialist contractors working simultaneously in the same or adjacent areas to install gas turbines, steam turbines, generators and associated MEP services.
