Project Update: KHUH Oncology Centre

Construction works at the Oncology Centre at the King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) in Bahrain are progressing sturdily with more than 7 million safe man-hours having been achieved to date. Priority areas are being handed over officially within the next few weeks and the whole facility will be handed over for full operational usage in early 2018.

The new Oncology Centre has been designed to the highest international standards of healthcare provisions bringing first-class cancer care and research facilities to Bahrain. It will be a 120-bed facility, covering 57,000 sqm including underground parking.

Incorporating the latest advances in technology, the Centre will combine research functions with comprehensive in-patient, out-patient, diagnostic and treatment facilities. Specifically, the Radiotherapy department will provide two linear accelerators, Brachytherapy and CT Simulators, while CT scan and MRI facilities will be offered in the Diagnostic & Imaging department. Additionally, the Centre will have a pharmacy, an ICU, 3 operating theatres, plus a 10-bed bone marrow Transplant Centre to treat both adults and children linked with King Faisal Scientific Research Centre in Saudi Arabia.

The development will also include a Central Utility Plant Unit which consists of medical gas, water storage facilities with an RO plant, chiller compound, generators, CHW pumps, boiler buildings and an oxygen V/E store. Externally the project consists of a network of roads with all utilities, various systems and soft landscaping works.

It is hoped that the Oncology Centre will play a leading role in the worldwide development of oncology radiation. Bahrain’s location at the center of the Arabian Gulf, neighbored by Saudi Arabia, will be critical to achieving national and internationally coordinated clinical trials to improve medical knowledge beyond borders and contribute to the worldwide fight against cancer.

The Oncology Centre has been designed by HASSELL in partnership with Bahrain-based Mazen Alumran Consulting Engineers (MACE) and team members Aecom, Baker Willis Smith and MJ Medical. The Client is Bahrain Defense Force.

Project Update: Bahrain International Airport

GPZ’s committed team is steering this important airport infrastructure project to its completion. With 90% of works completed to date and 10 million safe man-hours without a lost time incident reached recently, the 30M USD project is moving forward well and is expected to be completed in early 2018.

As part of Bahrain International Airport’s Modernisation Program, the project consists of a Fire Station, a Supergate Airside Entrance building, a staff car park, aircraft fuelling facilities and rapid access roads for fire brigades.

The fuel stations and rapid access roads have already been completed, while works on the 2-storey Fire Station building (with a visual watchtower, control room, workshops and housing bays for fire trucks and command vehicles) and the Supergate building are at the final stages.

Outstanding activities include the installations of IT systems, internal metal doors and kitchens, fixing of specialist security and scanning equipment, fixing of aluminium cladding to external canopies and parking areas, road connections to the airport road system, placing of access gates and perimeter fences, connection to the mains power and water, and the testing and commissioning of MEP and specialist equipment.

kfca tower

Project Update: KFCA Observation Towers

The project was undertaken by GPZ on a design & build basis, based on a concept designed by Atkins and supervised by SSH, which includes all civil and MEP works. It involves the extension and renovation of the two existing observation towers, one located on the Bahrain side and the other on the Saudi Arabia side of the King Fahad Causeway island which contains the borders of the two countries.

GPZ’s PM team has dedicated its efforts to progressively accomplish major key works to the highest standards. The existing base of the old KFCA towers has been widened and piles were introduced in order to increase the footprint of the buildings which will now accommodate a 54m high observation deck, 8 glass floored walkways, a restaurant and an aquarium exhibition.

The steel structure, electrical conduits and fabric shades have already been completed, while aluminium and glazing works, along with the installation of BMS conduits, fire alarms, fire-fighting systems, lifts and distribution boards are at the final stages. Other ongoing works include A/C ducting, drainage and plumbing installations.
