GPZ takes its initials from the company’s founder George P. Zachariades who was born in 1916. In the early 1950s he began his contracting activities in Cyprus setting the foundations for what was to become a successful business which would be carried on for 3 generations to date.

G. P. Zachariades Overseas Ltd. was formally established in 1956, at a time when Cyprus was in great need of infrastructure development. Undertaking projects for the Government of Cyprus, the British Bases and various private clients, the company began specialising in dams, hangars, jetties, highways, bridges, irrigation networks, power stations, as well as government buildings and residential apartment blocks.

In the early 1970s, following the substantial growth of the company, the vision was to expand GPZ’s operations beyond Cyprus. After exploring countries in the Gulf, Bahrain prevailed with its welcoming community, business-friendly environment and good quality of life.

GPZ was registered in Bahrain in 1976 as a Grade AA Civil Engineering and Building Contractor, also undertaking interior fit-out works and mechanical and electrical installations. Some of the first projects completed were the British Bank of the Middle East, the Immigration Headquarters, Yateem Centre and the French Embassy. The company very quickly began establishing an exceptional reputation for its high quality workmanship and timely completions.

In 1986, after the sudden passing of George P. Zachariades, his son Stefanos G. Zachariades took over the leadership of the company. GPZ continued to develop its impressive track record, providing professional management for a distinctive level of service and playing a leading role in upgrading building standards and raising the quality benchmark in Bahrain’s construction sector. Today, with 60 years of commitment to excellence, GPZ is an established and mature business with a work ethic and name synonymous to consistency, quality and trust.

Technical Diversity

Over the last 60 years, GPZ has undertaken a wide variety of both conventional and specialized projects therefore gaining the experience and all-round technical capability to execute all types of projects in the areas of building construction, civil engineering and infrastructure, and interior design and fit-out. Soon after GPZ began its contracting activities in Bahrain, we recognised the need to service a growing demand for improved build quality and sophistication. To meet this need, we quickly established specialist complimentary business units for our manufacturing requirements, MEP installations and resource management. Through this diversification and vertical integration, we have gained expertise in almost all key trades required in the Bahrain construction industry thus facilitating and enhancing our product delivery mechanisms. Our comprehensive and coordinated approach to discharging works ensures that the best value is provided to our clients in the execution of their projects.

GPZ’s Integrated Management System meets the requirements of ISO 9001:2008 for Quality Management, ISO 14001:2004 for Environmental Management and OHSAS 18801:2007 for Occupational Health and Safety Management. Quality Management

Risk Management

The risk management approach followed by GPZ is a three-tier system and addresses: risk identification, risk assessment and the eradication or minimisation of risks through careful planning and the application of good working practices. GPZ collaborates with clients and consultants to assess areas of risk specific to their projects. The company’s project management teams are skilled in developing site based risk management programmes and will work closely with the client’s professional team to resolve risk management issues.

Supply Chain Management

GPZ has developed a sophisticated and all-embracing supply chain which is managed by its Procurement Centre and Logistics divisions. This services all areas of the company’s construction activities from heavy civil engineering works through to interior decoration. We have built a network of reliable specialist trade subcontractors, as well as suppliers from a range of trading and manufacturing regions such as the Middle East, USA, China, SEA, India, Europe and Austra-Asia. GPZ’s specialised Procurement staff administer the procurement, shipping, insurance, handling, customs clearing, storage and delivery to site of all types of materials and equipment ranging from mechanical and electrical plant to hotel artifacts, FFE and SOE items. With the majority of the supply chain managed in-house, clients and consultant can be assured that even the most unusual components will be efficiently sourced, procured and safely delivered to site.

Environmental Management

No company can ignore the need to take measures to reduce the foot print of its activities on the environment. The active measures GPZ takes for sustainable construction puts it amongst the leaders in the industry. All company activities and operations follow current environmental legislation. GPZ not only prioritises environmental management within the company but actively promotes this to its clients. The company is committed to a Green Building philosophy and actively promotes energy conservation and eco-efficiency by participating in seminars and international forums. The company is able to offer clients a comprehensive service in developing an environmental strategy for their projects and can provide specialist and professional environmental design services. GPZ engineering teams have a full awareness of the LEED practices.

Health & Safety
